There are three concepts that set us apart from other companies and consultants: Demonstrated Integrity, Experience, and Principles.
Experienced, skillful people are the geese that provide the golden eggs. Feed and cherish the geese as all wealth is derived from them.
Loyal, trusting customers are also the geese. Nourish them with only value-added services, remain at all times honest with them, and always conduct yourself as if you were an owner of their company.
Hey stupid — it’s the Return-On-Investment! One should not encourage engagements that do not provide satisfactory ROIs.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach the man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” One should endeavor to always close an engagement having left behind a legacy of knowledge and understanding.
“Treat others as you would have them treat you.” Change only occurs through people. Before recommending change, understand the impact on people. Strive to provide effective change management plans with all your recommendations.
No engagement should go forward without both the client and consultant having a clear understanding of each other’s expectations. This is an iterative and interactive process. In other words, the client and consultant must sit down face-to-face and detail out the deliverables—all the while utilizing active listening.
“The Devil is in the details.” —Ross Perot. The client contracts the consultant’s services expecting that he or she will benefit from the consultant’s experience, knowledge, judgment, and thorough analysis of the situation. Only after the completion of reasonable due diligence should one provide recommendations.
“Do not milk the project!” Engagements must have clearly defined beginnings and ends. Trust that the satisfied customer will provide future work through referrals or additional projects.
